How to STOP the Inner Critic that says “You can never own a business”

That critical inner voice comes from self-doubt, which is rooted in fear. Every time you step out of your comfort zone, the voice will appear to keep you safe. The voices are stories of what you fear, and they are not the truth of who you are. It is all a part of being human. You don’t need to beat yourself up because they are there. It’s all normal!
You can look at it as being a good thing. When you have self-doubt, you know you are living outside of your comfort zone. Yay! The voices only appear to keep you safe and try to get you back to being comfortable. Please don’t fall for it!
When you own a business, you are operating out of your comfort zone most of the time. You are doing something that is out of the norm of what everyone else is doing. That is why others will try to convince you not to be an entrepreneur. They don’t know why you would give up the safety of a steady paycheck, benefits, and a 401K. They also don’t understand your passion for doing more with your life and making money your way!
It’s important not to let others and your critical voices hold you back from living your purpose and offering your service to the world with a business you want to build. The world needs your gifts now!
If you keep telling yourself you can never own a business, you probably never will. That is why learning to managing those voices is a critical step in starting a business. The good news is you can stop those voices that are not serving you. Let me show you how!
Be Aware of Your Thoughts
Your thoughts seem to come out of nowhere. I remember one time I was out for a walk, and the voices suddenly appeared. I was about to speak in a contest, aka stepping out of my comfort zone, and there they were. They said, ” your speech is stupid,” “no one cares,” “you will get laughed at.” It felt so real that I convinced myself there was no way I would speak in this stupid contest.
Then my awareness showed up. I said to myself, “wait a minute, here it is, my self-doubt is appearing out of nowhere!”
I thanked it for keeping me safe and still went and spoke at the contest. I had a great time and came in 3rd place. I was thankful for having the experience and glad I didn’t let the voices stop me.
When those thoughts appear: Stop, Challenge them, ask yourself, “are they true?” Thank them for keeping you safe, and then proceed with the action.
Don’t Believe Everything you Think
Choosing to believe your thoughts is what gives them all the power. They can be born from other people’s beliefs of you that you decided to accept as true. These thoughts aren’t facts. They are only temporary, and they only stay when you pay attention and ruminate in them.
Your brains are baseline negative. We have to fight to be positive. We have more negative emotions than we have positive ones. That is why we have to continually challenge these negative thoughts with new positive ones until it becomes a habit. Over time you will notice the negative thoughts will be less and less.
To stop believing all your thoughts. Make a list of your critical thoughts. They may be, I need more certifications, and I don’t know how to start a business. Counter all those thoughts with new beliefs and thoughts such as I have everything I need right now.
Have Self Compassion
The cure for stopping this inner critic is showing compassion to yourself. Instead of believing your critical voices or seeking approval from others, support yourself by thinking you are worthy and capable. Turn your judgment of yourself to fully accepting who you are.
When the voices appear, show comfort to yourself as you would a friend. Replace them with words of compassion. Tell yourself. “Everything is going to be fine”, “This too shall pass!” Yes, it’s fine to talk to yourself!
Celebrate Your Successes
Since as we said before, we have to fight for a positive voice continually. Celebrating your big and little successes at every step of your journey will give you evidence the thought isn’t true. It may be helpful to keep a box of the accolades you receive from others. So when you want to quit and don’t think you are not helping anyone with your services, it will remind you that you are. There are always going to be ups and downs in business. When you are down, go through the box to remind yourself you are helping others and to keep going. Your brain will now have the evidence it needs not to believe that thought anymore.
Constantly being aware and challenging your thoughts is what is going to keep you going in your business. It can be very challenging because sometimes it’s hard to see our thoughts. A coach can help you be aware of those thoughts that aren’t true and are holding you back from your success.
